Repair to Mast Step

Dear All,

I am now the proud owner of Vega 1718 Vagrant. My insurers, St Margarets, say that they will not insure the boat for use until I have had the mast step repaired. The survey says "there is evidence of a repair to the mast step moulding and a small crack was noted just below this repair along the corner between the coachroof and mast step moulding. Slight depressions were also evident in the coachroof either side of the mast step. Internally in the area of the mast step the headlining has been depressed.

Can anyone give me an idea how much this sort of repair is likely to cost? How long is a piece of string, I hear! OK I know it depends on precisely how much work needs doing, but I need to know approximately how much cash to pull from under the matress. Vagrant is at present in the marina at Fleetwood, Lancashire.

Secondly, can anyone recommend anyone to do the job in the Fleetwood area?

Contact Steve Birch, he supplies a kit which comprises two stainless steel plates and assorted bolts with which you can strengthen the mast support beam. I bought one a few weeks ago, it was £110 (I think) and basically, you take off the heads door, the frame above and remove the main bulkhead pelmet to expose the mast beam, loosen off the standing rigging or remove the mast as a whole, carefully jack the beam back up until it\'s properly aligned, tighten the main bulhead/hull connecting bolts, then bolt/screw these steel plates to the support beam and reassemble.

In theory it sounds simple enough; I\'ll be fitting mine when we get back to Rome in early April, so I\'ll let you know how it goes.

instructions. There is another Vega owner very close to you owned by a

I fitted the mast step reinforcement kit from Steve Birch to V 1775, Alkira
(in Liverpool) some two or three years ago. It's fairly simple and
straightforward to do yourself. If you want any more detailed information
