The rudder on my Mariner is wood and the bottom 26" was covered with fiberglass by a previous owner, so I do not know the condition of the wood. I presume not good. The fiberglass is split along the lower edge of the rudder and is separating from the wood. On one side of the rudder the fiberglass is also cracked. Any suggestions on how to fix this or should I just buy a new one? Stuart Marine sells the rudder mahogany blade for about $200. What other sources are there? Are durable solid or weighted fiberglass rudder blades available?

Hey Bob, There's a guy in Raynham that has his own cabinet shop at his house. He does this for a living and he's also into restoring sailboats as a hobby. He's into sailboarding but he owns a Compact 16 and a Pearson Ariel that he has done excellent work on. You could probably have him build it for you with the old rudder blade as a pattern, and you could finish it off yourself. He could build it out of any kind of wood that you wanted. He loves building with white Oak, but he has Mahogany, Teak, and every type of wood imaginable.
