Renovating sails

I purchased an old boat. It has old sails. The boaters at my marina are not unified in their support of a shop that can both clean, fix, and update my current sails. General condition is fair. I think they are good for a few more years with some tlc. I am asking for specific suggestions on shops that can help me with a stretched main, a torn jib (small tear about 9" L shape. the spreader gard which was old is now at the bottom of the lake and my jib didn't like meeting with the spreader :I), and a good cleaning of both. Any and all help will be appreciated.

old sails

An old sail that you know is stretched doesn't sound like a good candidate for "renovation". I'd expect the return (useful life remaining) on the investment (lots of labor $$) would be poor at best. I doubt that you'd ever get it to fly with any sort of efficient shape (hence propulsion power)A sail that bad probably has suffered UV damage as well. If the sailcloth is otherwise in good condition but needs minor stiching repairs might be OK. I would recommend that you have a frank discussion with someone from any reputable sail loft. They can advise you on the investment needed (a cost estimate) and the expected return (based on their years of experience). You can always use the old sails as a tarp. --Ron
