May have sold boat but buyer wants Renault rc8d removed which is in the process of having top end redone consisting of the following: Head has been completely reworked and back to spec (valve recess etc like new surface ground pressure tested), Cylinder to be bored one over new piston order waiting to place (73mm piston, rings, wrist pin. all fitted plus new head gasket.. Your cost will be what I pay (will have receipts) plus will give good deal on rest of engine which had no known issues. Also have good water pump, new modern type starter ( geared type) modified automotive alternator with cut out circuit and so on. Also good working gear box. If any one is interested in "top end" items no I will go ahead and place order but will not assemble unless deal falls through. IOW if boat is sold, parts will be fresh and ready to use if not, I will use myself. comments and questions welcome.....NOTE: no commitment requested just finding out if anyone interested...cheers Frank

My RC8D still runs, but it needs starting fluid on every start, so the compression is probably down. It's overheating, and changing the impeller didn't help. I lapped the face plate of the water pump to eliminate some of the bypassing, but I won't know if that worked until I get it back in the water.

Do you still have the engine?
What is the state of the rebuild, since your post is more than a month old?
It might be good to have a replacement ready to go if it wasn't too dear.

You wouldn't consider letting the water pump go separately I suppose?

Thanks!

ALso interested in an update on the status of your RC8D. Not likely interested in the whole shebang, but may be interested in parts.

Also To SNOWOWL, I've occasionally had overheating issues on mine, but it's mostly related to blockages inside the engine/water lines. You might consider back-flushing the engine. May not be your water pump at all.

Renault rebuild up date. After seeking out opinions (www.oldmarineengines.com) and other sources I concluded that a limited "repair" will do. In my case I need a new piston and 1st over rebore but that may involve fitting wrist pin (piston comes with matching pin) can't really be done without pulling motor. I have honed cylinder, fitted new rings, and head is full up to spec. I had cyl/head surfaced ground and free space is achieved by skimming .010 of piston. I should get acceptable performance...but don't expect a lot of power. Since I have an outboard also not a problem. The specs on diesels is critical to get full power 450-500 PSI compression (cylinder/piston gap .055mm max..think copy paper) a worn bore will reduce power drastically and starting hard (no ether). If not happy with results I will part out and let you guys know. Thanks for your interest and I will keep you posted.....cheers frank

SnowOwl and txmilke,

I recently pulled the RC8D out of my boat and replaced it with a Beta 14. Let me know if you are interested in parts. The water pump works fine and I have 3 new spare impellers for it.

How did your conversion go? My RC8D is working great now, but would like more power when motoring through chop on Lake Superior. Interested in what it took to convert and what modifications had to be made. What was the final cost? Did you do the work or have it done?

Hi Bill,

Sorry for the slow response, I've been away from the forum. I did the work myself with the boat in the water. The conversion wasn't too bad but it did take a while. The most time consuming part was lowering the engine bed. It was about 2 inches too high for the Beta 14. Once I got it cut it down, re-glassed, and painted, the rest was straightforward. I built a plywood jig of the engine to help with alignment. I also installed a new waterlift muffler before putting the new engine in. Then it was just a matter of hooking up the water and fuel lines and the throttle/shift cable. The final wrinkle was that the control levers were backwards, but I just reversed them inside the pedestal. Stanley from Beta Marine was a great source of guidance whenever I had questions. The Beta 14 is a good fit in the Hunter 27- a little snug, but the layout of the engine makes it fairly easy to get to everything even in the small space of the engine compartment.

The cost was around $8000 (most of that the engine, which I bought new, plus some hoses, new soundproofing, the muffler, and a new raw water strainer). I had some of the fiberglassing supplies on hand for the engine beds.

It's a lot of money to put into an old boat, but I plan on keeping the boat for a long time. I'm really pleased with the power and lack of vibration. It felt like the RC8D was shaking the boat to pieces. The new engine is much smoother and quieter. It's especially nice on longer trips when the wind dies and we end up motoring for hours at a time.

Re: RC8D parts

Hi- We have a 1979 Hunter 27...with an RC8D and I'm on the hunt for information about a rebuild, or at least a replacement of the head gasket.

Anyway, I'm originally from Austin and I found the fact that you have one on Lake Travis interesting... Do you still have the boat/RC8D? Any words of wisdom? And/or are you now parting out your RC8D?

Thanks!

PS. I'm fairly new to this forum so hopefully I'm following all protocol, etc!
