Could anyone advise on the best way of removing the old name on the stern and then replacing with a new one. Is this something relatively easy to achieve?

depends on old name

If the old name is vinyl lettering, heat it with a blow dryer. If it's painted on, you'll probably need a chemical solution. I understand (haven't tried) that Easy Off oven cleaner works - but only do this if you're on the hard and can catch the junk that runs off - wouldn't want those chemicals in the water. Also, there are other chemicals available to do the trick. I think there was a thread about this not too long ago? Might try searching the archives. After you remove, you will probably want to buff and wax the entire area to remove the shadow from the old name. But then, you have a shiny spot, and the rest of the boat needs doing :) One good thing always leads to another, huh? Good luck!

Just Finished Mine Last Week

It was easy. I used a window paint scraper that uses a single-edged razor blade. It came right off with no blow dryer or heat gun. I used mineral spirits to remove any residual adhesive. As Sherry says, the shadow remained. I used rubbing compound and electric buffer. Then 3M-cleaner/wax. Then, the shiney spot looked so good, I rubbed, buffed and waxed the rest of the hull. The shadow was still very faintly visible. On the new name, I "upsized" and it almost completely covered any remaining shadow. The graphic company that made my new lettering said the shadow would fade more when exposed to the sun. BrianW

Removing painted on name

I used Easy Off oven cleaner and a soft scrubbie. It took two coats. Spray it on and wait about 20 minutes and then use the scrubbie. Then after you have removed the old name you will have to use a rubbing compound to even out the condition of the stern. Apply a good coat of wax to finish off the job. I agree with Brian and Sherry; you will want the rest of the boat to look as good as the stern so you will want to wax all of it. Don't forget the renaming ceremony so you will have nothing but good luck with the new name. Paul H.

Dename Before Renaming

Tradition (and superstition) requires you to go through a DE-naming ceremony first. Then, you can rename. The attached link has an article with the entire process. Many scoff at this as silly, but it carries on an important sailing tradition and it's actually fun. BrianW
