What is the minimum needed to do when renaming your boat to continue with good luck . We all know you cannot remove everything with the old boat name on it

Invite your friends to the renaming ceremony and throw anything with the old name in the water and sail backwards over it. You have removed the old name from the boat.
The sailing backwards should be attempted before bringing friends to watch you figure out how to do it.

My research suggests you have to sail backwards across the equator while offering sacrifices to Poseidon. Based on that I have never renamed any of my boats. It will slowly eat your brain worrying about it for as long as you own the boat. Best not to mess around with supernatural forces.
I have always just renamed the boat and gone on with life. I am not very superstitious. But, I have customers who have gone through detailed ceremonies where they have poured urine from a virgin into the bilge and walked around with insense burning until it went out. They invited a bunch of people and had a party and it took so long for the fire to go out in their little insense pot that everyone else was long in bed while they were still walking around the boat yard at night waiting for it to go out. Seems like a bit much, but then they have had good luck in their sailing. Who's to say?
Just make sure you never confuse her with her former awful name. Toss all those old cups, pillows, floor mats, poems, clearance permits, etc that use the name. Instruct crew and guests of the same, make it a serious offense. You wouldn't call your current GF by a former's name would you? ...well you might, but then you would be seen as incompetent in the ways of romance. Same with boat ownership. If someone calls her by the former name, ask them who in the name of Zeus they are talking about.
The only requirement in my opinion is the imbibement of lots of rum. Other than that, be creative and have fun.

I believe we make our own luck. As for renaming your boat I would stick to an old phrase that I learned as a young trooper. “If what you’re trying to do is not improving on what has already been done then you should leave well enough alone”. So if the old name is hideous then improve upon it, otherwise a name is a name......

We renamed our boat.... First we invited all our friends, second drank a lot and had fun, third busted a bottle of champagne over the anchor, fourth saluted Neptune and introduced Wild Oats to him! Had a blast! Seems to have worked for us! Go for it! :dance:
Hailing port?
We will be changing our boat name and adding the hailing port in a few weeks. As a licensed vessel, the only crucial identification on the boat is the alpha-numeric designation on the bow.
However, I'm wondering whether the hailing port should be the location of the marina or the location of our home. I'd appreciate any guidance.

The Hailing Port is normally the usual location of the vessel. However, in reality as long as what is on the vessel matches what is on the documentation it really does not matter much.
