I have a 1985 Hunter 28.5 the decorative stripes just below the rub rail have become faded, stratched etc. and need to be replaced. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to remove the stripe tapes with the least damage to the glass underneath?

Scrape them Off

Many people refer to a rubber 'eraser' attachment with a power drill or use a hand held hair dryer on low heat. I found using a $4.00 wall paper scraper from Lowe's worked just fine. You need to watch that you don't dig in a corner, but mine came off quiclky and consistently. I used 'Goof-Off' to remove the last residue of adhesive. I bought 2" and 3" silver and navy blue striping tape from West Marine and the updated look makes it seem like a new boat.

It depends.

Carl: It depends on the condition of the vinyl. I tried to scrape them off and that did not work. I tried the hair drier and that did not work. I used the eraser and the entire cabin stripe was gone in a matter of minutes. The vinyl on cabin was very dry and brittle. Then I tried to remove the stripes below the toe rail using the eraser. This was not nearly as easy to do but it still worked. I used the eraser on a air drill (using a compressor). The entire port side of the boat probably took about 3 hrs. This vinyl was much thicker and more pliable so it was a much slower process. You can obviously try the scraper and hair drier/heat gun first. This will cost you nothing but your time. It that is NOT satisfactory, try the eraser. You may also want to consider one of the chemical products from 3M or one of the other mfg. Just be careful when using a scraper, my experience was that it did a better job of gouging the gel coat than removing the vinyl.

I'll vouch for the eraser as well.

Took the stripes off of my 35.5 two weekends ago. There were 4 1" stripes on each side, I figured at least 200' total. Took me 4 hours to do it and the $25 erase. The yard quoted me six hours and would have cost me over $500. Well worth the effort. Try your local bodyshop supply store, they'll know what you're talking about if you ask for the "Stripe Eraser" T J

Stripe Removal

Carl: I removed the hull stripes on my H31 in about 3 hours once I got the hang of using a heat gun. The stripes peeled right off in sheets. You just have to warm the old stripes, if you leave the heat on to long you will have a gooey mess. Good luck, let us know how you make out. Also there was practically no residue to remove.

Heat gun...

I just got done putting new stipes on as well. I also used a heat gun and a plastic scraper. If you keep the heat right should be very little adhesive to scrape off. I used alcohol to get the residue off. Be careful not to get them to hot. I did all the stripping in about an hour or so. I was able to get hunter colors and the logo from Hunter at a pretty cheap price. Rob Morton
