I have to replace the cutlass bearing on a Hunter 29.5 shaft. I can't slide it off because boat's already on the hards. The rudder blocks the shaft with the prop on. If I take off the prop, will I be able to slid shaft out? Thanks.

We had too

Hi Bill, The rudder should be positioned to allow the shaft to slide out with the prop off. However, last spring we could not get the shaft out with out removing the strut on my 1989 33.5. So, removing the strut is your best bet. Phil

Skeg or motor

This is really a question for the Hunter site, but I ran into this problem. The seascouts had a 30' Hunter donated to them with a Renault engine and the drivesaver failed. Reading the Hunter site told me that either the engine or the skeg had to be moved to get the shaft out. They had the yard move the engine, but the skeg might be easier. Check Hunter archives, etc. p.s. we couldn't decide which was more lame, the brand-x drivesaver, the choice of a Renault engine or Hunter's shaft location.
