We have recently acquired our boat and wish to rename her. The current name is painted on the sides of the hull in large lettering. We wish to remove it and leave the hull clean. Does anyone know how to accomplish this without leaving marks in the gelcoat.

Shadows

If the name has been on the gelcoat for a long time, there most likely will be a name shadow in the gelcoat that will never ever come off. The gelcoat fades around the numbers. The name and reg. numbers are forever in the gelcoat of my old tub. Don't be surprised if once you get the name off, it's still there.

Painted on Boat Name Removal

I used Easy Off Oven Cleaner. Spray it on and wait about 20 minutes. Then use a soft scrub to go over where the name is. You may have to do this a couple times but you will love the results.

If the name

has been on there for a while... what you will probably find is the gel-coat is RAISED in that area of the letters. When the PO polished and waxed the boat... the area where the name is does not diminish in thickness... protected by paint/vinyl. What you might need to do is hit that area with some rubbing compound, finesse then polish with a buffer. If the name is going on in the same area... it will not be very noticeable. Don't forget Vigor's denaming/renaming... INVITE TOUR FRIENDS... DRESS LIKE NEPTUNE... PLENTY OF SPIRITS... IT IS A HOOT!
