Keel hauling

Tom, I pulled the SK on a V17 20 years ago. I was sandblasting and painting the trailer so the boat was off anyway. Some fiberglass work on the SK was required. I used a 2" pipe A-frame to lift the front while the stern rested on horses. Here's a guy who did a CB job on an O'Day 20. He has pictures and diagrams of the supports he built. Happy Sails and Good Luck, MArk

Keel Maintenance

Tom, Although doing the actual work on the keel, i.e., stripping, faring and repainting, isn't that big a deal, removing and re-installing it can be. Remember, your dealing with chunk of iron that weighs 500lbs, and if you don't have the right facilities and equipment, you can get yourself into big time trouble not to mention possibly seriously injured. Many C-22 owners have performed this task by themselves successfully, but unless you have an absolutely good, flat surface to work on, such as a concrete pad, have a safe means to lift the boat, and stands to place it on, the potential for disaster increases. Even with all this, removing the keel itself can still be a dangerous operation which should not be attempted lightly. Best, safe bet is to put out the extra bucks for a competent yard to do the work, that way if the boat gets dropped or damaged, it's their responsibility. Otherwise, be prepared to face extensive repairs if something goes wrong (which it almost always does) while you're attempting to save a few hundred dollars. Good Luck !

keel removal

Tom; Many years ago I took the swing keel out of my C-22. It wasn't too hard. The most important thing is a good, flat, level space. A flat concrete driveway will do. I used a floor jack to raise the boat on the trailer, one side at a time, and placed 4X4s between the hull and bunks. Used two floor jacks, with fabricated U-shaped weldments to get the keel out. Lift it a little, take the strain off the mounts, unbolt it, lower the jacks, and pull them out. The weldments hold the keel upright. Go slow, get some help. It's do-able.
