I have to drop my rudder to replce my prop shaft. Does anyone know the weight of the rudder? Is there anything I should be aware of that will make the job easier(besides paying some to do it)? Thanks Ron F. #5110

CHECK YOUR HEIGHT!

Sorry for the caps, but I was going to have my strut bearing redone, and could not do it because the boat was not high enough above the ground. If your boat is like mine (79 Cat 27), the rudder post is so long that it will not drop out its tube if the boat is standing on its keel. In short, you are probably going to need to have it up in a cradle with a foot or two of clearance under the keel. Best of Luck, and let us know how it turns out. Rob

Rob, Thanks for the heads up. Was your boat a wing or fin keel? Mine is a fin keel. With the boat on its keel there is about 20" of clearance from the ground to the bottom of the rudder. Do you think I will need the additional foot or two? Friday is the day I have to drop it.

Fin Keel - my favorite

Actually, this was one of the few tasks that I did not do on my own. Normally I do all my own maintenance, but I heard that the strut bearings can be a real bitch, and sometimes require a special press to get them in and out. So, I handed the job off to my local rigger/mechanic. He was the one who actually found out that the rudder would not drop out as long as the boat stood on its keel. He even tried to rock the boat forward a bit in order to lift the stern a mm or so. No such luck. He also commented that the rudder post was much longer than it needed to be (design-wise), and that we would need to try it in a cradle next time with some air under the keel. If you would like to see a photo of the set up for the boat, check out the photo forum, under Bottom Job - there are some huge photos there and they will give you an idea of what we were up against. Anyway, best of luck. Please post back and let me know what you found. If you could post a photo - that would be killer. Best Regards, Rob p.s. - you're a lucky man to have a boat in Oyster Bay. I got my BA at Stony Brook just down the Gold Coast from you - Oyster Bay and the whole North Shore is beautiful! p.p.s - If you still want the boat to stand on it's keel, I guess there's nothing stopping you from setting a large 4"X4" (or a couple banded together) under the keel, allowing it to rest on the wood.

rudder dropped

Rob , The rudder came down easily. I had about 20" of clearance from the rudder to the ground. I had to dig out another 14" - 16". The rudder post is 33" if anyone needs to know. Temptation II, #5110 fin keel

Question

Ron - Does that mean you dug a hole under the rudder in order to drop it out? If so, what did you dig a hole in - the ground? Forgive my curiousity - drydocking is different down here due to real estate. Thanks! Rob
