I would like to pull my rudder with the boat sitting in the water. I know it can be done, but would appreciate any helpful hints from someone who has actually done it. Also, I imagine that getting it back in is more difficult than removing it. If you have any tips or shortcuts that will make the job easier, I'd really appreciate your advice. Thanks.

Well the rudder is supposed to float :)

Hey JimG Well I have been told/read somewhere the rudder is supposed to float. I think the stock is just in a fiberglass tube, with nylon rings at the top and bottom for bearings. With that said, (that was a disclaimer, BTW), the only thing holding your rudder on the boat is the tiller fitting. Mine has been wrenched so tight that the ends meet. I have read of people tightening up the clearances with graphite impregnated epoxy inside the tube, but that would be a job for on-the-hard I think. I would tie a line around the rudder, (so you can find it if I was wrong and it sinks)or so it won't drift off to San Clemente if it floats. And if you are going to do it this weekend, let me know so I can come watch, drink beer and maybe even lend a hand (well, applaud if it works out OK ;)

removing rudder

Thanks for the tips. I wasn't going to try it this weekend, because we're going to the Island for a week, but just may give it a try when I won't need the boat for a while. Just in case. Thanks.
