Although they no longer leak, there is noticable damage along the floor of the hanging locker, under the portside chainplate. A small area is rotted and the liner near it has a large mildew spot. We are thinking of cutting away the flooring in the locker to inspect the extent of the damage. After doing so, we are planning on replacing the floor of the locker with a heavy screen. Mike: A little more than two years ago I bought a 26 that was a project boat. It required extensive repairs, including some like you described. If you want some additional comments email at shoaldrafter@yahoo.com. The leaking chain plates and ways to repair and rebuild them have been discussed several times on this forum. Keep in mind that anything said for the O'Day 25 will also apply to the 26. Is the boat out of the water? Is the mast down? My recommendation as to repairing requires the mast down to facilitate disassembly safely. With the mast down, you can remove all screws that hold the parts that you mentioned. You may find that after treating mildew to stop rot and futher deteriation that you can rebuild the problematic pieces using epoxy and epoxy fillers. This may be the easiest approach to your issues. I would say that the damage came from water leaking from chain plates and not lack of ventilation. Disassembly and rebuilding or replacement of the pieces will provide better structual integrity. Excellant picture of gutted O'Day. I would be interested in seeing other pictures of your project, inside and out. You went way beyond what I had to do. My fix was mostly on the areas adjacent to bulkheads where the chain plates leaked. And the companionway door rotted away. I did have to replace all exterior teak which I used HDPE to do. an off list email address is shoaldrater@yahoo.com Ed K

26 project follow up question
Appleman: Excellant work. I only had limited problems compared to what you did. Did you replace bulkheads? or just refinish them? Showing Mike what you did might scare him. I did not need to take out any bulkheads. They need only small areas of repair which I did with epoxies after getting rid of mildew from moisture from leaking chainplates. I am aware of two 25 owners who have done what you did, including all new bulkheads. Did you replace forward hatch? I did and it was a standard size. I have several exterior deck repairs that now after 18 months you can see where I did repairs. However, I think that I can buff out some of the color mismatch since it is not that great. I did not learn of the Florida company selling color matching gel repair until after I mixed and matched by hand. How was your exterior teak? Is the project finished? Any finished pictures? ed K

I didn't expect such a response. Appleman, you should have renamed your boat "Patience" after that job. I didn't realize that removing the hanging locker bulkhead was so easy. I'll probably replace the flooring rather than cut away just the section inside the locker. At first, I wasn't sure how big of a job it would be, but winters in RI provide nothing but time anyway. Speaking of which, Appleman, it looks like you are in Allen Harbor as well. Are you new to that area? I thought we were the only Oday 26 in there. It'll be neat to see the finished product of your labor. Shoaldrafter, we replaced most of the exterior teak last winter and salvaged the rest. At that time, Rudy at D&R didn't have the handrail replacements (now he does), so we spent a lot of time restoring them. Also, we had Rudy make us new hatch boards. We chose Captain's Varnish 1015 to finish all of the teak. I wouldn't recommend it. It started to show damage spots in the middle of the summer, and we will have to refinish them again this year. I'm thinking of using Bristol Finish this time around. As far as our chainplates go, we have sealed them up properly, so they no longer leak. The previous owner didn't do a good job of this. There seems to be more mix-ups with the software changes that are going on. I just checked another thread and I am from Bayshore NY on that one. My boat is moored in Indian Cove located in Guilford, CT. During the winter it is on a trailer on my farm in the Berkshires of Western MA.
