Removing Ritchie Compass and Mount

I’m adding a Raymarine Axiom chart plotter, but I have limited room on my existing pedestal guard due to my Ritchie Compass mount. It has really turned yellow over the years, and I would actually prefer to remove the compass and the compass mound and just put a new cover on. Then I would have plenty of room for my chart plotter.

I sail a hunter 28, and I think I’m required to have a magnetic compass on board. But does it have to be at the helm?

Even if there were such a rule requiring a fixed mount compass, which I find unlikely, you don't certainly need it mounted on the pedestal. Think about it, what if you were tiller steered? No. Invest in a nice quality bulkhead mounted compass, such as the Plastimo Contest 101. It's beautiful, affordable and can easily be seen from the helm, especially when illuminated during those peaceful night sails. p.s. shop around, they can be found highly discounted. This one is $100 below the WM price.
