I'm looking to remove the painted stripes and names from my boat. It's old and looking bad. I'm searching the net and the solution that keeps coming up is Easy-Off oven cleaner! Anyone have any success or failures with this?

I used the Easy Off to remove the painted on name from the transom of our boat. It did work, but I had to wetsand the entire transom to remove the last of the old paint, and to get a uniform shine back to the whole area. Not a bad project, but not a quick 1 hour project either.
If the name is on the transom, here's another method.
Our boat had 10 year old hard paint, and some spilled varnish that EZ-off would not touch.
Our boatyard guy too one look at it and said, 'wet sand'. Got some fine paper and went at it, after a few minutes of gentle scrubbing it all just came off. Did the whole transom in about 30 minutes. Now:

I wish I had known about the Easy Off years ago when trying to get the old painted name off the transom of my Hunter 34. I did what Jackdaw did-wetsand! Takes some time but good results.
easy off wont touch all types of paint, but if it works on the type you are trying to remove, its by far the quickest and easiest.... but it still takes a bit of elbow grease. it wont hurt the gelcoat but it will remove any oxidation or wax from it...
Heat gun and hard plastic scraper, start on 'low' setting and dont 'burn' the FRG. Use the heat to 'soften' vinyl enough to scrape.
Follow up with goo-gone to remove remaining adhesive. You may need to wet sand the sun unaffected and 'raised' gelcoat that was shielded by the vinyl ... flat sand down to 1000 grit then power buff out the entire area.
I've seen people recommend a 3M wheel for vinyl but have no experience. Check youtube for videos.
