I plan to remove the faded painted-on name on my boat's stern. Could you guys suggest a method that has worked for you in the past? Should I use a chemical paint stripper or sand the name off? Thanks in advance.
The link was for vinyl removal. I would definately not use paint stripper, as it might "melt" the jelcoat. I have found my #1 stain removal friend for jelcoat......lacquer thinner. I've not found a stain yet it won't handle, and I know it'll remove paint. Remember though that it strips all wax and protective coatings from the jelcoat. Good luck
Interlux makes a paint remover for fiberglass, Interstrip 299E. You can find the info on their website, www.yachtpaint.com. Follow it up with Solvent Wash 202. Stuff works great, won't damage the fiberglass, and is easy to use. Removed a 20 year old painted name in about 2 hours. Don't use anything else, use what is made for the job.
Do it the easy way with Easy Off oven cleaner. Just spray it on and wait about five minutes, then wash it off. It will NOT hurt the gelcoat and is a cheap and easy way to remove paint.
