I want to remove the painted name of my newly purchased boat and replace it with the new name. What is the best way to remove a painted name on the transom? (It's not vinyl - I already checked).

Oven Cleaner

John: Oven cleaner is the "best" product to use. The warmer the weather the better it works. Just spray it on and let it set for 10-15 minutes. Use a good brush to scrub the paint off. Hose off the surface and reapply if necessary. There tends to be a little paint left over. Once you get the initial paint removed you can clean it up with a little rubbing compound.

Boat renaming

There is a proper procedure to rename a boat. Once upon a time they used to get a virgin to p in the bilge. When that became hard to find someone came up with the following alternative procedure. http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/rename.htm

Good Old Boat

There is a whole article on this in Good Old Boat, really covers the subject well.

I have used the oven cleaner method myself as menthioned and it does work. However, there will remain a "shadow" which you may have forever. On my current boat I wanted to change my boat's name, but couldn't find a virgin. What I do now is each year I spend a few hours on a ladder with a fine artist's brush redoing the name and it comes out reasonably well.

Removing vinyl

Gerry - I recently removed the previous vinyl lettering name on my boat with a hairdryer. Very easy. Older lettering comes off not as easy, but still easy. I used a plastic putty knife to slightly lift a corner, then grab it with your fingers and heat and pull slowly. You'll get the hang of it. Use a solvent to remove any left over adhesive. Buff the underlying gel coat with polishing compound to reduce the "shadows" of the former lettering/graphics. Dave S/V Pas de Deux Catana 471-44
