I just stripped paint from the topside gelcoat of my Hunter 23.5. I think the paint was Interlux. I used Interlux Interstrip 299E and a rounded (worn) putty knife (2in blade). This is recommended by Interlux and I found it worked well. I also used ZipStrip paint stripper gel which worked about as well as the Interlux except that it contains MEK and would soften the gelcoat if left on very long. I had to be very careful with the ZipStrip to not scratch or gouge the gelcoat. The Interstrip was not as hard on the gelcoat but I still had to be careful. Both softened the paint as well as the other.

The link given in the previous post sounds very knowledgable and I would try those methods first.

Name removal

I used Easy Off Oven Cleaner. It is very fast and leaves no marks. need to neturalize with vinegar. It is an Acid but very mild. Spray on let set till you see paint blister and wipe off. maybe three or four minutes at best.

Use very little it works very fast and is very cheap.

Good luck.

Ditto on the Easy Off

Easy Off worked when we removed the boat name on our first boat. If your going to rename the boat, be sure to do a renaming ceremony and invite your boating friends. It may be good insurance and it's definitely a good excuse to have a little dockside party!

I tried citra-strip, easy off, acetone, mineral spirits, soft scrub, green scotchguard scrubbies- it took all of these! It was very easy to scratch the gel coat, and I was so frustrated I didn't care- The vinyl letters covered up some of my over zealous scraping. It took me several hours of hard work and scrubbing.

First tried to use Interstrip to remove 2 coats of paint and a layer of anti fouling paint. This method works if you have lots of time on your hands and a big budget to keep purchasing stripper.Used 2 litres of Interstrip to remove about 1/3 of the paint from a 19' hull. Took the scraper to the rest, sharp, and sanded with 100 grit with an air operated orbital sander in less time than the stripper. Primed and put on 2 coats of polyurethane paint. No antifouling required as I will be trailer sailing.

Michel:

I have always used Oven Off with great success. It sometimes takes two applications, but will remove 99% of the lettering. I had not heard about the vinegar, but that seems like a good idea.
