I just bought a 1984 H34. The name of the boat was painted on the side with blue paint. I’d like to move the name to the back of the boat but I’m scared of trying to remove the name you will still see it on the side. The lettering is pretty big so if there is any “bleed through” it would be noticeable. Anyone with any experience in this sort of thing would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advanced. IS THIS BAD LUCK????

Removing paint from fiberglass

I had the same problem when I bought my last boat. I ended up using Easy Off oven cleaner and it really did the trick. Spray it on the paint and wait about 20 minutes. Take a soft scrubbie and gently wipe it off. You may have to do this 4 or 5 times depending how long the paint has been on the boat. This will not damage the fiberglass but be sure to thoroughly wash the area when you finish or the new paint will not properly adhere. Yopu might have to compound and buff the area as well. If you are painting on a new name, or using stick on lettering, be sure you put a good coat of wax on it after you finish the entire job. Hope your job turns out as good as mine did. Removing Paint

I used Franmar SOY-STRIP, an enviromentally safe paint stripper to remove the previous name and hailing port from my boat. Slather it on well and cover with plastic wrap for about half and hour. Use a soft scrub pad and it comes right up. Amazing stuff. Ken S/V Little Nesi San Carlos, MX Hunter 380

You may find...

After 20 years, the sun has probably faded the hull and, where the paint was, it will not be faded. That means you will see the old name. it may take a year jor more for it to fade.

thanks

That’s what I was concerned about. I’d hate to take it off and see the shadow. I have no clue how long it’s been on there.

Name Removal

My 1983 h34 had a lot of gelcoat on it when it left the factory. After using paint remover and or EZ Off oven cleaner I would not hesitate to wet sand the transom with #400 and #600 grit paper. I did that more than once with no complications

Rename a boat

It is ok to rename a boat if you follow certain rituals. I first heard about finding a virgin to p in the bilge. But in modern time that may be difficult to find. And then I came across the following link. Sounds reasonable to me especially the drinking part. http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/rename.htm

We used EZ Off ...

It takes the paint off pretty readily. We removed "Mixed Blessings" from Red Bank. The shadow remains. Also, Sara from Spring, Texas comes through in just the right light. That name had to have been removed over a decade ago. I think that sometimes you just have to make peace with the ghosts that you live with. ;) We haven't re-named yet ... we're still waiting for the right inspiration, or at least some kind of agreement on what the name should be.

repolish the boat

i had this same problem with a trk i bought the paint was oxidized pretty bad except where the lettering was .ifound this stuff called magic polish at the swap meet it basically removes the oxidation and coats the paint with some kind of polymer so water and dirt dont stick better than waxand you can use a low speed buffer to apply...
