I've done it twice now and there is no easy way. There are adhesive removers that didn't work well for me. Both times I took it very slow with a single sided razor blade. Slowley peeling the old one away. Both were vinyl lettering. I was able to do it without chipping the gelcoat. I don't have any experience with painted on lettering. Good luck. There was recently a thread on how to remove the 'ghost' name. Look back in the threads.
disposable putty knife to gently lift edge and peel. Key is just warm enough to loosen but not so soft it breaks. Then 3M Adhesive Remover in spray can, it's a mix of benzene
use a piece of corian and make a scrapper with it you will have to sharpen it with a grinder a few times but it will not scratch your gel coat youll probably need to heat it up as well!!!this will also remove dried varnish !!!if you use a razor blade you run the risk of scratehes
A couple of years ago I asked the same question on the forum. The response I got was to use Easy Off oven cleaner. It worked perfectly and did no harm to the gelcoat. I was surprised how effortless it was.I'm not sure about the question about adhesive. If the letters were painted you should not have any adhesive. Either way acetone will remove adhesive with no harm to the gelcoat.
I used my daughter's electric hair dryer to heat up the vinyl just ahead of where I was pulling gently. I used nail polish remover to disolve the glue residue. I'd have gone with paint striper if they'd have been painted on.I was at Waconia tuning my H23 all day today. They will be releasing the bouy's on the next calm day. How goes it at White Bear?
as of Friday last week. There were not any boats in the water as yet. My husband and I actually keep our 1985 Hunter 34 in Bayfield at Pikes Bay Marina. We did sail and race on White Bear Lake for 12 years or so on smaller boats. Have you ever sailed in the Apostle Islands?
