Dear Mariners: I wish to remove entirely from my 1980 Hunter 36 an older Alder Barber refrigeration system that is not working. I'm primarily a day sailor, so its not at all needed. And in any case, I suspect just buying more modern ac/dc "cooler" will be less expensive than having the old unit professionally repaired (assuming that it could be repaired). My question: Before taking the unit out, do I need to have a refrigeration technician first check to determine if it contains the environmentally restricted R-12 Freon and have it evacuated? Thanks for any tips/suggestions. Rardi

Yes

If it has any pressure in the system, it will be r12, and should be recovered, but if it doesn't work, the freon has probably leaked out long ago. If it was mickey moused at any time in the past, it could even have propane *yks in it, either way, better safe than sorry. Tim

have a tech look at it...

it may only be a simple repair required, and you can be back in refridgeration. And it can be converted to r134.
