want to remove painted transom lettering and replace with vinyl. heard easy-off oven cleaner works with gentle heating. any thoughts on easy removal that won't damage gelcoat.

If the lettering is old and beginning to fade...

...use 3M FinesseIt and a good wool buffing pad on a rotary buffer (random-orbitals suck). Cheers, Bob

Careful with oven cleaner

I would (and have) used soft scrub before but that requires care too.

Easy Off

Hello, I used Easy Off last year to remove the old, painted on name on my "new" boat. The easy off worked well. I sprayed it on, waited a minute, then rubbed it off. The EO pretty much melted the paint and did not damage the gel coat. A few hints - be sure to wear gloves, goggles, etc. Have a supply of rags and fresh water handy. Let the EO sit on the name for a minute before you start rubbing. Good luck, Barry

Have used Easy Off several times...works great

But you don't need heat...use the type of Easy Off that isn't heat activated. Tools needed: rubber gloves, metal spatula, plastic scrubber pad, big sponge, water hose or bucket of water, shop towels or rags. Depending on weather, a couple of beers or some coffee. Spray the Easy Off on only a couple of letters...you don't want it to dry before you get there. Sip on the beer or coffee for about 5 minutes...scrape off the letters you've sprayed with the spatula. You'll get about 90% of the letter(s) off...spray 'em again...sip for another 5 minutes or so. Spray the next letter or two, then use the plastic scrubber to remove the last of the first letters, sponge that area off with water. Depending on how long that takes, have another sip or two or just move on to the next letters...till you've removed the whole name. Wash the whole area thoroughly with detergent and water after you've gotten the whole name off...finish the beer or coffee. Btw...it was a professional boat name painter who put me onto Easy Off nearly 20 years ago....told me that's how he'd do it, or I could save $50 by taking it off myself before he came to put the new name on.

Gentle heat for vinyl lettering

Warm each letter gently with a blow dryer then pull it off before it cools. Peter H23 "Raven"
