There is moisture in the rudder of my 1975 Ericson 27. What is the rudder filled with and how do I dry it out? I'm stumped. I've made a grid and drilled half inch holes on both sides of the rudder into the core and checked the moisture content. It ranges from two to ten on the moisture gauge. Any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

2-10 percent moisture isn't a time to panic.

Kiln dry wood typically exceeds 12 percent. I suppose that if you want it perfectly dry you will have to bake the rest of the moisture out and then seal it with several coats of epoxy. If you can close it up in a car, in a parking lot, in a shopping center, in July for about a month that will work.

Rudder problems

My rudder has a few cracks and it's weeping water. I'm going over to the boat now (on jacks) to remove, but have a feeling it's going to be hard to get off and I'll have to dig a hole for clearance in the frozen ground. Any advice on removing the rudder? Thanks, Nick
