I need to remove the starter or at least the solenoid. What is the best to do this? The diagrams of the engine are not very good. Any tips? Should I remove the alternator and go thru thpe front, or go at it from behind ? Where is the solrnoid bolted on?

Get the alternator out of the way. I rewired my boat's wiring harness last fall and removing the alternator really opened things up in that area. Because it is a boat, you will probably end up having to go at it from the side, top, behind, underneath and front 
You may have to remove the oil filter to get at the bolts. Should be fairly easy, just take your time.
