Removing Hurth HBW 150

I'm trying to remove the HBW150 to replace the damper plate. I've removed the bolts holding the adapter plate to the motor, disconnected the shift linkage, undone the prop shaft and pushed it back a few inches.

All pretty straight forward.

But! The adapter plate seems to have welded itself to the engine bell housing.
In hindsight it shouldn't have been a big surprise since the adapter plate is steel and the bell housing is aluminium.

I've whacked all around with a hammer but there is no obvious place to pry on. (Westerbeke W46).

Likely someone else has solved this problem and hopefully are on the forum.

Can you remove the bell housing with the gear/adaptor assembly? Don't you need to remove the bell housing to get at the damper plate?

According to what I see on the parts picture there is enough space to get the damper out once the adapter plate is off.
I don't want to take the bell housing off as it has the rear motor mounts attached to it and that makes it a lot more difficult.
I'm doing this in the water.

Look harder at that parts pic for bolts going into the adapter plate that can only be accessed by removing the bell housing?
Good point... I seem to remember bolts on the inside of the bell housing with our last boat, VW conversion with Hurth 150
