Removing Headliner

Does anyone have any ideas on the best way to remove a glued on headliner panel? It's glued to fiberglass.

Flim,

rent a wallpaper steamer. I don't think the water will do much but the heat will probably do wonders to soften the bond. Probably slow going.

Heat gun and sharpened putty knife???

I would be concerned about a heat gun because it would more likely burn the fabric than heat it appropriately. The fabric will try to insulate. The water would probably soften the adhesive enough but do it safely. I'm not against heat guns. Used one to strip the outside of the boat a couple of years ago. Strip my previous ancient house with a blow torch. But inside with fabric . . . the terms "gutted by fire"and "burned to the waterline" come to mind. Throw in "overcome by vapors" and "smoke inhalation".

The piece I'm trying to remove is wood veneer glued to fiberglass. I think the best approach for the fabric portion is to just cover over it.

If it's just veneer, grind it off with a large course disk or a belt sander. Be sure to use personal protective equipment.

Gasoline and a match. Make sure your insurance is paid first. Just kidding.
Most adhesives are not water soluable. Mechanical grinders may be your safest bet.
