If the PO Did something this foolish, you should assume that there are several, perhaps many, other foolish things done that you will discover on this boat. I would walk away and look for a better deal

If you look back through the archives, you will find many posts calling for spray foam as the "cure" for slapping wires inside the mast.

looking at a nice deal on a (mostly) well-kept Catalina 25
If you are looking at the boat for your own sailing use and the boat has not been used for sailing, then you need to look at the boat as a gut and refit.

You really have no idea as to the workmanship or quality focus of the precious ownership. “Great Stuff” spray in the mast to stop the noise should be a clue.

For a 25 ft Catalina that you want to sail and perhaps race, then remove everything and replace with good hardware. I suspect if you want to race, that you are not planning to be the last one always to cross the finish line.

If this feels too daunting a task, or beyond your budget, then I would suggest it is not a “nice deal”. Keep looking for a boat that will serve your needs not a project that you have to fix to move to it’s future home.
