Removing front stay

I have to remove the front stay on my Hunter 44DS to allow it to be lifted front on, into the travel lift at our yard due to the large array of equipment on the rear of our yacht. Has any one done this? Is the support of a spinnaker halyard forward to a cleat sufficient to support this?

I would think your halyard should be fine but Crazy Dave should know. Chief

Check the breaking strength of the line being used for the halyard. I doubt the unloaded mast will place a load that will approach much less exceed the breaking strength. Now going to a cleat that will be farther back and to a side may decrease the holding ability of the halyard. Why not consider doubling up and using two halyards possibly crisscrossed to two opposing cleats.

I am not completely sure of the description if the poster meant to take the mast down/up or simply to detach the forestay. A better description would be desirable.

It sounds like you cannot use a halyard to the bow to support the mast, as that willl be in the way just like the forestay is.

Can you slack the whole rig and support the rig with a halyard to less forward position? Maybe.

But the truth is your YARD is doing the work, and will be responsable. Let them sort it out, and don't move the responsibility back to you by following the advice of 'some guys on the internet'. That includes me! :)

I concur with Jackdaw as the yard if you are paying them to do the work should have the experience and know how to lower a mast with gear. If a respectable yard, they will have liability insurance as well if a mistake is made and damage is incurred. I would not rely on anyone in this matter to include me as well. Well said Mr. Jackdaw for the sound advice.

Got the job finished now I got a rigger in and he attached lines across from the front bollards and then ran the front halyard for the headsail down to them fixed with shackles and then winched on tight. We slackened of the topping lift and side rigging a bit to take out any strain. He also ran a rope from just above the first set of spreaders down to these bollards as well. Job went well but I must've met I was a bit apprehensive
