Removing fitting

I have to remove the 1 1/2" ABS hose fitting from an inaccessable through hull ball valve. Does anyone have any great methods for acheiving this, thought of heat but frightened of damaging the seals valve.

Try some WD

Colin: I had this problem on my mixing elbow. I forced a screw driver under the hose and squirted some WD in there. I was then able to finally get the exhaust hose off. I am not sure that this will help in your situation but good luck.

Oooh, Steve...wouldn't do that!

At least, not unless you plan to replace the fitting...'cuz when you stick screwdriver blade under the hose, it "dimples" the plastic fitting, destroying the hose's ability to create a seal. Best thing to do is warm the hose with a blow dryer--and you can get it quite warm without damaging the hose...just be patient and give the blow dryer time to do it--and work it off. OTOH, y'all do realize that you're going through all this to try to save a $3.00 fitting...??? If the reason you're doing this is because you have to replace the hose, using a serrated knife, cut the hose off behind the fitting...then cut the hose that's left on the fitting lengthwise and peel it off.

Its the fitting thats tight!

Soory Guys you missed the mark, its the fitting that is tight in the valve not the hose. I have removed the hose, its the hose barb that I need to remove from the valve.

Now we understand?

Colin: Now that we understand, I'll repeat, use WD or some penetrating oil. If the area is toooooo small for traditional wrenches you mite try a chain wrench. Well I hope we understand. Good luck.

Will the valve come out?

Just did this Colin. I couldn't get a wrench or vise grips on the hose barb but could get something around the thru-hull end of the valve. So I just took the whole thing off the thru-hull. But I'm guessing you can't do this either. And my hose extension was so tight that heat would not have helped. So I'll watch this for more creative ideas.

Fitting removal

Here is my two cents worth. Maybe something will work. If the fitting is ABS, can you take a piece of ABS pipe that fits snugly over the existing fitting and glue it on with ABS cement. Wait a couple of days for it to set. Try not to get it all over the valve. It would act as an extension up to where you can get a pipe wrench on it or a big pair of adjustable pliers. Make sure it is ABS (usually black) and not PVC (gray). That would change the solvent based adhesive you use. Borrow a 3/4" drive socket and extension that you can hammer over the fitting and turn it out. The socket needs to be tight enough to press fit. Do they make e-z outs that big? I bought a tapered device for removing broken sprinkler risers from fittings from a plumbing supply house. It was only for 3/4 inch pipe. Maybe they have one for extracting larger diameters. Try cutting a slot in the fitting an putting a wide blade into it and turning it. All of these suggestions assume that you can get straight onto the fitting through some access hole. Can't you enlarge the hole for more access? If it is sideways, drill a hole in it and put a short screwdriver in it and twist. Drill another hole and twist again. If it is ABS with teflon tape on the threads, it should get easier fairly quickly. I hope someone didn't glue the fitting into the valve it that is plastic too. Good Luck.
