Removing faded boat name

My boat has 6 year old Algrip and very faded name/ port lettering.

What's the best way to buff off the old painted on name without trashing the algrip so I can get a new decal
With name/port.

If the name is a decal (not painted on), then the best method I've found is to use one of these 3M "Stripe off" wheels.. they work great and will not harm the surface under the decal.

If it is painted on, you can use easy off oven cleaner to remove the name. I mask the adjacent area, and use as little as possible to remove the painted name.

then good to go.

But I was unsure of the Algrip factor.

There's not a heckuva lot that is going to hurt that Awlgrip.

Chris Patterson has it right on the durability of the awlgrip.... when i removed the name from the awlgrip painted stern on my boat, I used easy off oven cleaner to wipe the name off, then buffed it out... but the awlgrip didnt need buffing, and the 3M super duty buffing compound buffing didnt touch it anyway. its hard stuff.

The Easy Off took the lettering right off. My 3 m pad did scratch the Algrip slightly(my bad) but nothing a little wax won't hide.
