Removing Exterior Paint

I want to remove the name that the previous owner of my boat painted on the stern. It was painted in black over the red gelcoat, using some kind of paint specifically designed for stripes and names. What is the easiest way to remove that black paint without also removing the red paint beneath it?

Exterior paint

I had success removing old paint on my Com-pac by soaking the paint with, of all things, WD-40. Sprayed it on then cleaned off with a 409 type cleaner with a plastic (not Scotchbright--too abrasive)pad.I probably had a enameled type paint, but came off, nontheless. Don't know what paint is on your stern, nor the condition of the gelcoat. There may be some other specialized solvent specific for this job--I'm just not aware of it. Good luck---

Paint or Vinyl?

Are you sure it is paint and not vinyl? If it is paint you might try minerial sprits. If it is vinyl, easyoff oven cleaner works very well.

Easy Off

That's what we used. We tried using just the Easy off

Had the same problem

I had the same problem. Easy Off didn't work for me, and turned the white gel coat yellow (a process which is thankfully reversed by wiping with vinegar). I finally used a heavy marine paint stripper specifically labeled for use on fiberglass. I don't remember the brand now, but the label was light blue and white. I also used a fairly soft Scotch-brite type pad; the paint remover alone wouldn't do it. A lot depends on the paint. The former name of my boat was in two colors and two different paints; they came off at very different rates.

Thanks!

Thanks! These are some very helpful tips. The good news is that I have a quart of paint to cover up any potential damage I do to the gelcoat, but I'm hoping to avoid that.

Paint off....

When I stripped the bottom of my boat I used a product called Star Ten. It's a thick paste that you spray on or apply with a roller. This stuff works!! I'll never sand or scrape again. Find our more at Starten.com

Bottom Paint

Based on 'Wind Chimes' recommendation I checked out the Star Ten web site. I will definitely be using it on my bottom paint this spring. Looks like good info to me. Thank You Wind Chimes !!
