Removing Datamarine Depth Sounder

I fear I will have to soon remove my old (and faithful) Datamarine Corinthian depth sounder and have it repaired (by DMI). In looking at this bulkhead mounted instrument, I'm not quite sure how it comes out and thought I'd ask others who've done it.

From the inside, the back of the unit appears to be held in place by a trim ring with allen screws around the edges and allen screws holding it to the bulkhead. Looking at it from the cockpit, a bezel is around the outside of the unit. If all the allen screws are removed/loosened, does the unit come out aft toward the cockpit with bezel attached? Do the fore-and-aft allen screws hold the inner trim ring to the bezel on the other side? Or what?

I have The Corinthian series of instruments as well. I haven't taken them out but the speed instrument has been missing since I got the boat and the front bezel is still there along with the round body tube so I think all of the instruments are the same. The instrument package appears to be removed from the rear (interior cabin side ) leaving the front lens and bezel in place.

Look at the back of the instrument. A springed, split wire holds the guts of the instrument into the case. Remove the electrical wires-mark them as to their location and use a small screwdriver to free the wire from the grove that keeps it in place. If thee is a small toggle switch on the front of the bezel, unscrew the cap that holds it in place and push the toggle thru the glass. The appratus will slide out of the case. Bob

Warren, I had the same "how to find it" issue. Look closely at this picture, top shows the gray ring with the end going into the top of the back of the unit. Just spring it off.

DMI is great, unit returned promptly, works just fine after many years. You'll be a happy skipper, too.

Thanks to all for the advice. FYI, DMI tells me repairs for this unit typically run $150-$200, which seems reasonable considering replacement costs.

Warren, that sounds right. I paid $186 in early 2007 but probably bought as few paddlewheels for my knotmeter at the same time.

Thanks for the note, glad I could help. It's pretty hard to find that little ring thing, even with good access. My unit is in the cockpit coaming requiring contortions galore to get to it through the lazarette.
