Removing Combi box With Boat in Water

Has anyone in the group pulled their Combi reversing
mechanism for overhaul without hauling their boat out
of the water? I have been told that I must haul the
boat (a 1977 av-27) out; and yet I have an article in
a 1980's newsletter entitled, "Combi Without Tears"
by John Thorp "Jobiska" Vega#1625 that says,
"Firstly, it is not necessary to haul the boat to
remove the box, nor is it necessary to dismantle the
prop. In fact, it is a serious mistake."

I don't want a bunch of salt water rushing in as I am
loosening things up. If anyone can tell me for certain
I would greatly appreciate it.

I replaced the MD6A last year while in the water. After disconnecting the
shaft from the gearbox I went over the side, grabbed a hold of the prop and
with a good pull the assembly came right out. My wife was inside and just
followed the shaft with a wooded bung that fit he sandard stuffing box and
that was it. There was no gusher of water and than a quart of water got in
to the boat. I followed that up by removing the stuffing box to rebuild it
and just used a larger bung and snugged up the clamp to hold it.

My husband, Paul, and I replaced the Combi in our Vega twice while she was
still in the water in the same manner that Hans described in his e-mail. We
didn't experience any problem with it, although I must admit that I was very
nervous about the procedure! It went swimmingly, so to speak! Melanie &
