bulkhead. Yup the chainplates leaked while the PO had the boat in storage. He fixed the leaks (not properly but that's another long story) and left behind the stains. I can kind of relate previous posts to oxalic acid or bleach washing but I don't want to lighten the teak in those areas and have to re-finish the entire bulkhead. I have too much else to do at this point (read into parenths above). What is the best way you've found to clean stains like these and just be able to re-oil the area. Thanks gang!

stain removal

A quick washing with household bleach & a fibre scrubber, followed by a good fresh water rinse should kill the mold, and bleach some of the dark colour out. It won’t bleach the teak to grey. There is no way to remove the black mold stains, without some bleaching. Approach the job conservatively, perhaps first with diluted bleach, and increasing strength until you achieve the desired effect. It’s more an art than a science.

Amonia

I try to stay away from bleach on Teak. I use a very mild mixture of ammonia, dish saop and water. Just use a scrub brush, then scrub it with fresh water, let it dry and it's done. The Ammonia takes care of any biological mung and doesn't lighten the wood.

Teaqua after cleaning

Rob, I'm with you on the problem of too much to do with too little time, but I think anything you do is going to lighten the teak enough that you'll need to freshen up the oil. In fact, picking at the spots after applying teak oil is one of the ways to get them off if the spotting isn't too bad. Teaqua, which is a non-sticky teak oil with a darkening tint to it, is what I used on my bulkhead after scrubbing off the runny rust stain from a fire extinguisher bracket with teak cleaner (oxalic acid). The Teaqua evened out the color completely and I was very pleased with the result. It only required one coat, which dries to the touch within a few days.

black streak remover for FG

I used black streak remover with a scrubby pad. I used the cleaner on some inside stains on my glass sole and over spray went on some wood covers and when i wiped them off they looked good.they where a lighter shade but teak oil brought back some of the coler and time yellowed it up .I just rinsed with water ,let dry, light sanding on bad spots, wipe on teak oil looks good.John
