Anyone have a tried and tested way to get barnacles off of a prop shaft? These are almost the size of golf balls and are the largest I have ever seen.

Easier, a putty knife or scraper worked best...

for me to remove the beast from the shaft then I use the green non-metallic abrasive scrubber pad to remove the residue and clean the shaft to make it sparkle. Terry

The very BEST...

...is TRACS. You simply spray it on and watch them disappear(NO elbow grease at all). Best of all its environmentally friendly stuff. Needs no special protection for you or the yard, completely biodegradable. From the manufacturer: Barnacle Buster™ is a safe, non-toxic and biodegradable marine growth remover specifically formulated to meet an industry wide need for fast, safe, cost effective alternatives to mechanical cleaning of seawater cooled equipment. With minimal dismantling required, Barnacle Buster™ can be safely re-circulated through seawater cooling systems, dissolving barnacles, zebra mussels, calcium, rust, lime & all other mineral deposits. Green Marine Products is now carrying Baracle Buster in our product line.

Barnacle Buster

sold under various trade names is industrial grade phosphoric acid. It works well. If you dilute it, be careful - remember what happens when you add water to acid and regardless of whether you dilute it, try to keep it away from the shaft log and strut bearing, both of which can be easily damaged by the acid.

The real problem area is inside the hull......

The hardest area to clean is the shaft where it disappears up into the hull. It is in a tube-like area. I have devised a simple tool that cleans this area easily. See the attached link to a Photo Forum posting that I made a while ago. Otherwise, I agree that a good scraper is best. I follow-up with the waterproof sandpaper that is available in rolls for cleaning copper pipes and clean the shaft with a wrap around it and a back-and-forth motion with the sanding strip.

About your ZINC

One thing I read about everytime I added or replaced any Zink tab or add ons was that you should not have any paint or antifoul on them. They may not be as affective. This is something I always see being painted over.
