Hey Everyone, This post may apply to swing keel boat owners only, but I think that everyone can benefit from this. I have heard many horror stories of bolts breaking and heads shearing off due to corrosion while trying to remove the swing keel hanger bolts on Catalina 22s. Knowing I had this job ahead, and terrified of the ramifications of shearing the head off one or more of these bolts, I prepared them before the job. I Bought some liquid wrench-like stuff from an automotive shop. I forget the name, maybe PB, but it came in a crazy looking white and flouresent orange spray can. This stuff worked great. I sprayed the bolts once or twice a week for about a month a half. I also tapped the bolts with a small mallet to break the corrosive bonds that were present. This past weekend was the moment of truth. I built my wood frame to lower the keel into, put it and a car jack in place, and took a rachet to the bolts. And I am happy to say that all four bolts came out beautifully. I don't know how bad the corrosion actualyl was, but I am sure that whatever corrision was up there came out So anyone with this job ahead of them, or with any stuck nuts, bolts, and screws, try this stuff. I am glad that I did, especially after all the horror stories i have read about keel bolts breaking and or people losing their keels due to faulty bolts.

Nice going . . .

Sounds like you had the happy story. Good thinking on applying liquid wrench stuff to the bolts well beforehand. Regards, Ted

PB Blaster is that what you used?

I have used this, better than liquid wrench. You can get it at any automotive stores. Alan
