I'm trying to remove the transponder from an old depth sounder. The transponder is glued into the hull with 5200 or something like that. It's a bit tricky to reach inside the hull too (not enough room for a hacksaw). Has anybody done this before? Can you drill it out some how?' Thanks, Tom

Leave it there

I recommend simply abandoning it rather than tryin got remove it.

More holes dillema

I too, had to remove an old transducer. I decided that leaving it in and drilling another hole was OUT-OF-THE-QUESTION .. Hole and Boat are mutually exlusive words!!!! .... Fortunately The old unit was made of nylon ... I was able to cut and chisel away the mushroom cap from the outside and punch the unit up into the hull. My new transducer was chosen to fit the existing hole and it now lives there quite happily ... and I am quite pleased that there are no more holes than necessary. Fair Winds ... Dave

SIMPLE SOLUTION

Tom: Had the same dilema a number of years ago on my old Hunter 31 when I needed to change the knotmeter. After hours of pondering one of the workers at the yard I haul at simply suggested I remove all attachment hardware (eg anything mechanical that is holding the transducer to the hull), place a piece of wood over the short barb that sticks into the hull, and give it a good whack with a hammer/mallet! Just one or two and mine fell right away from the boat...much to my surprise! I was VERY worried that it would cause some damage to the hull, but the darn thing came away totally clean. I would strongly recommend against cutting another hole in the hull (there are too many in all our boats already!). If you still really aren't "comfortable" removing the transducer, I'd recommend asking the yard to do the job. Can't cost but a few bucks for 15 minutes of work... Good Luck!
