I posted similar message in general forum, but our boat will no doubt have to be lifted out of the position hurricane Katrina set it in. I'd like to know how to get info on taking down the mast and how heavy it is. Thanks

Mast weight

Aluminum tubes for masts vary, my Islander P40's stock mast section weighed 6 lbs/ft. Smaller boat smaller section less weight. Add rigging, halyards, antennaes. My current mast has a smaller and lighter section it weighs all up about 300 lbs and is 59 ft long. Approximate from there. Sorry for your loss.

Heavy, heavy hangs over my head.

The mast on Bietzpadlin I30 is 35 feet and about 80 to 90 pounds. To step and unstep this stick I made an "A" frame and I set it up about six feet forward of the mast and guy it to the stanchion bases with 3/16 inch galvanized wire rope. There is a sheeve at the top. I tie my spare anchor rode to a halyard and raise the knot to a point higher than the "A" frame. This heavy line runs to a block at the bow fitting and back to my sheet winch. Then I take a light strain on this line and release my forestay and my lower forward shrouds. One man needs to be available to keep the foot of the mast from escaping the step! I then ease the line that supports the mast at the bow fitting and start it falling aft, VERY CAREFULLY AND SLOWLY!! at some point the support rope will be in position to engage the sheeve at the top of the "A" frame. Make certain that it is in place and continue lowering the mast. This is when the man on the foot of the mast is crucial, IF he loses control of the base of the mast it will slide forward with great force. My wife and I have raised and lowered our mast several times with a two speed sheet winch.

Marco, I think that I understand that when you start your engine the seal on the propeller shaft leaks. Yes? There are two nuts on this "pipe" and they are used to hold a material that helps to prevent water from entering around the shaft. First you should loosen the thin nut a turn or two and then tighten the big nut about one half of a turn then tighten the thin nut again and start the engine and see if the leak is smaller. If it is still very much then once more loosen the thin nut and tighten the big nut, But not very much, then tighten the thin nut again. If this doesn't help then post again. Ross in Bel Air.
