Remove Edson wheel?

Hi All,

I have an '87, O'day 272LE. I was given as a gift a leather wheel cover that needs to be sewn on. Does anyone know how I can remove the wheel so that I can do the job at home.

The short answer is just remove the single nut from the hub and if you are lucky you can pull it right off.

If not, try some good penetrating oil (I like Kroil) let it sit and then try to tap it off with a hammer and block of wood.

If it was like mine and still doesn't come off try a big gear or wheel puller. I borrowed one from an auto parts store and with a lot of tapping, swearing and pulling it finally came off.

Now, after cleaning up the shaft and the wheel, and keeping a little grease on it, it is a simple 10 second job.

Thank you Richard. I always assumed that the wheel would just pull off after unscrewing that nut, but it did'nt. And to think of all the time I spend tightening it as as I sail, fearing it might just fall off.

There is a metal key (rectangular shape block approx. 1/4"X1/4"X 2") the fits into the wheel shaft. Where the wheel slides over the shaft there is a cut out for the key. This is what locks the wheel on the shaft. If you can see the cut out when looking at the wheel center with the nut off try sliding a small screwdriver into the slot taping on the key. Its possible there could be some corrosion from the two metals.
