Remove cover on coarse/primary filter?

Hi
all ready for new season, fuel & oil filters changed,
engine oil replaced,
UV sacrificial strip replaced on headsail
sails checked and patched.

But I cannot get the cover off the primary filter.

A local RNLI mechanic advised me not to bother - the fuel flow rate was
so low that provided I replaced the fine filter every year it "didn't
matter"..

Any comments?

...cannot get the cover off the primary filter...

That's the one on the back of the engine; yes?

Your friend may well be correct, I've opened up ours and cleaned it on several occassions and never found much crap in there, having said that I'm happier to have checked. It is a bit fiddly to get off, especially the first time I did it - stuck down with paint, which looked original so perhaps never previously done? Hints which might help: -

the cover doesn't 'overlap' the main body, so levering on what appears to be its projecting edge is a waste of time, the cover's edge is a 3-4mm in from the edge of the pump body.
If you remove the centre bolt completely, then press your thumb over the hole whilst someone turns the starter, the fuel flow pressure might 'lift' the cover for you.
Alternatively, find the edge of the cover (its not easy to discern) scrape around it with a sharp point - I use a sail needle, then gently tease it up with a strong needle.

Good Luck,

Hi All

I have purchase copy of the DVD of the IFR 2008. It is a fine example of the ethos that keeps the Vega an active class of boat. Not only does the film cover in interesting detail with excellent photography the sailing and social events of the gathering but also demonstrates the love and dedication that Vega sailors have for their wonderful little boat. Thanks to Joop Wagenmakers for the time and effort that he has given to the films
production.

I am not on commission but recommend the purchasing of a copy by both the Vega owners that attended the IFR 2008 and those that could not be there.
