I am thinking about purchasing a 1988 43 foot Ron Holland sailboat with teak decks. The cabin top also has some teak on it. Under the teak is fiberglass. Can anyone estimate what it would cost to professionally remove the teak and add non skid to the deck ?

Why would you pay someone to remove bungs and screws and old teak decks. As a boat owner, you should be willing to do or learn to do, a lot of the things that you'd be willing to pay a contractor like me to do. There's plenty of info available out there that can bring you right through all the steps right up to filling holes, painting and applying non-skid. None of these tasks are all that difficult to do. It's a lot easier to estimate how much it will cost when all your paying for is materials. Give it a try . You'll feel great satisfaction and pride. Good luck.

Can I do it myself ? Well maybe I'll have to, because no way would I spend 25K to get it done ! Where can I look on the net to find out how to remove the Teak decks DIY. ? As to Y the answer is #1 Teak is so hot in the tropics you can hardly stand on it ( without a water bucket to cool your feet ). #2 I would rather work on my sailing skils than on the deck. Its a lot of work to maintain right ? #3 I read somewhere that most Teak Decks have to be replaced after about 15 - 20 years. This boat has 15 years on her now. Thanks for your input !

...come to think of it, that trawler had teak over plywood, so the fix was to remove the teak, repair and replace part of the plywood and then to glass the deck over. So, $25K was for a bit more work. PSS: this is pretty common with far-east boats of a former era and a nightmare after a decade. The Baltic (38) next to me is professionally maintained. They told me the teak needs replacing. It's a $40K job, they are estimating. Again, that's going back with teak and there aren't a lot of people trained to do that stuff anymore. Rick D.

You CAN do this yourself.
Rodney: Removing the old deck should be a breeze (dirty and time consuming). Once the wood has been removed you will need to scrape the caulking and fill any holes. If you check the Plastic & Gel Coat forum, you can get some information on where to purchase the gelcoat to redo the non-skid

I recall an article in CW about 1-2 years ago about a DIY boater having chronicled the steps with pictures and describing how much happier he was with the new deck (or it may have been relieved it was over).

Rodney, We have a 46' aft cockpit morgan...we absoulutly love,,, But we have non slip decks....Both my wife and I love the look of wood decks and since the islands are more of a trip we will take in the next few years (north east cruisers)...We have been looking for a deck deck installation package.....but probably wont due it..Cost vs. enjoyment ratio.........How many years have you owned your boat??...maybe the wooden decks will grow on you....Good luck. PS I to am a DIY...Ill try just about anything...and have done many things I am proud of...even if It did take more than once to do it right.... PPS from Michigan how often will you sail to the islands? happy sailing

DIY Magazine a few issues back had an extensive article on redoing teak decks. Biggest part of cost to hire someone is labor. If you remove the old decks your self you save a lot. Not hard to do, but time consuming and can be frusteratingly slow tedious work.
