While you may not want to go through with that entire process, it does explain that the idea is to round off the sharp edges of the scratches. This will help them to kind of disappear from a few feet away instead of standing out.
As to matching the color, the little buff colored gel coat repair tubes gets close but everyone I talked to said due to age it is almost impossible to get a good match unless you let an expert do it.
While I followed the steps in the link I didn't try to remove all the scratches but did fill a few with the buff color gel coat. I like to them of them as the scars of age, kink of like what's on my mid 60s body.
That and I only really see them when on the hard. In the water I don't see them at all.
