Does anyone know if the propeller shaft on a 1992 Hunter 28 can be removed without dropping the rudder or strut? I was looking at it over the weekend and it looks like it may be a very close fit once the propeller is taken off. On a separate note, has anyone replaced their plastic stuffing box (I think it came standard with my Hunter) with a Bronze one? Finally, has anyone installed a vibration reducer between the engine coupling and the propeller shaft coupling? Any pros or cons? Thanks.

I had to remove the rudder on my 34 to remove the shaft. Measure the distance from the strut to the forward end of the shaft. If that distance is greater than from the rear of the shaft to the leading edge of the rudder you will have to drop it. If you remove the strut with the shaft, the rudder can stay. Re: Plastic stuffing box. I much prefer the plastic one. It can be adjusted without tools and will never corrode.

If you remove the strut it should sneak by the rudder. If you think you need to ad a flexible coupling to reduce vibration, check the alignment. A boat is always in motion and the alignment will change over time. The prober fitment is .001" per 1" of diameter of the coupler. Pat McCartin Inland Marine Diesel Buford, Ga imd_ga@hotmail.com
