The oil filter on my Beneteau First 38 is stuck hard, and I am having trouble finding any leverage with any wrench (mainly due to lack of space). Any suggestions? Will the filter unscrew more easily with the engine warm?

Definitely would try that. Always warm the engine up before changing the oil and filter. Once you remove the filter with gasket, reinstall a new one and hand tighten and then give it one quarter turn. This allows the filter to fit securely without being too tight. The attached link provides some options untighten.

I had to drive a screw driver through the canister once because I could not get a wrench on thr filter (an old car of mine). Made a heck of a mess, but the screw driver gave me enough grip and leverage to turn it off by hand.

Good luck,

Greg

I use a filter wrench like this for years, never had a problem with access. :

I wish I had an answer to your problem. Unfortunately, I am here looking for a solution to the same problem. Guess I'll have to resort to the screwdriver (and clean the resulting mess)...

I’ve had some success with strap wrenches in some spots like that. Might give leverage if you can’t quite get a good enough angle for a standard oil filter wrench.

From Autozone.
If the oil filter surface is oily, the rubber strap looses traction. I put pieces of sandpaper between the strap and the filter. Since it is continuously adjustable it can be used for fuel filters as well.

If the strap wrenches fail, I've used a screw driver or cold chisel on the metal rim close to the engine. First create a dent in the rim then angle your tool of choice to rotate the filter.

I have a filter “wrench” that fits the bottom of the filter with a 3/8 socket wrench fitting in it. Just enough extra leverage to get the job done.
I have had it so long I can’t remember where I got it, but used it to get the oil filter off my lawn tractor engine.
I recall seeing those for the bigger automotive filters as well.
