Don, you're right...

I meant to say that the hand-held did the scanning while the WHAM/base station sat on 16. Sorry for the confusion--wishful thinking!

I never use mine. I have a great hand held that I can take in the dingy with me. I use it instead because it is less hassle. Same your money and don't drill holes in the boat!

How about wired mic on the arch

I noticed that you have the H420. If you have the fiberglass arch instead of the the stainless rail arch, mount a wired remote mic there. I have the Standard Horizon Ram Mic and all functions can be done at the helm as well as below. My hand held is reserved for dingy use or when someone is away from the boat. On our 2 to 4 month trips on the boat you never have to worry about an outside VHF, its always there and ready to work when you need it. No batteries to charge and no chance of loosing it overboard.
