Many of you recommend so many different types of cleaners to remove the bird poop. Well, some of them worked, but not well. Some did not work at all. I don't hold that against anyone. We just have birds that produce poop with a high atomic number. Today I got rid of all the bird poop, even the industrial nuclear waste type that would not budge regardless of what I used. Untill... I used a spray bottle filled with vinegar. Yep, took the bird crap right off. It did leave a chalky film, but that is a minor inconvenience that is remedied by a good sponge bath after using the vinegar. I'm not worried that the vinegar will hurt the gel coat. I used just enough to rid the poop and then I hosed it down to dilute the vinegar. Oh... the boat smells like a House Salad! ;D

bird dung

Here is a bird dung tip for you. If you have lifelines let them be slack when you leave your boat. Lifelines are like telephone lines to birds.... they sit on them and deposit droppings on your boat. If they can't sit on your lifelines your dung problem will be lessened considerably.

Kennyb, you really think a bird can't

perch on a slack wire? What may seem slack to you is probably nice and stable for any perching bird under two pounds.

Lifelines and birds

My '86 222 O'Day lifelines were getting a little dingy looking after I replaced the plastic tubing on the shrouds and back stay. I had been having a little problem with small birds sitting on the original lifelines with the white coating painted. When I covered the coated cable with the proper plastic tubing, guess what ? birds became history. I think they feel unstable when landing on the plastic as it tends to twist and roll..

Ross, I was merely giving a tip about how to possibly reduce bird dung on a boat. Leaving lifelines slack MAY reduce the number of birds crapping on a boat. I never said it was a foolproof way to ELIMINATE bird dung... only a suggestion. You are correct..... I didn't take into account the weight of the bird vs the likelyhood that because of a birds light weight he could possibly still land on the lifeline slack or no. My suggestion to you is: don't heed my suggestion. This isn't brain surgery... just sailors helping other sailors. There always seems to be a purist in every thread. Have a wonderful day! ken in sacramento
