I am a 21 year old college student. I salvaged a 1982 22' Hunter this spring and I have completely redone the boat, but I know almost nothing about sailing. I need to put the mast back up, but people have warned me that I have to have the stay tension just right or I will demast the boat. Is this really that critical? How exact does it need to be? Does anyone have any tips? I was just going to lay out the stays before I put the mast up and make sure they are all exactly the same length. Then keep track of the turns on the turnbuckles on each side to make sure they are at least equal.

owner's manual info

Here is a link to an owner's manual. It's not for a 22, but the directions on mast stepping are pretty universal. I hope this helps.

Find someone....

to check the tension on the stays and to make sure the mast is vertical. If its a salvaged boat, check the wire on the stays to see if any are dangerously worn. Most of the time, you can find a helpful hand at the local marina. What you don't want to do is to get the mast up, go out sailing and have the whole rig come down. Its not just scarey, its dangerous. But once you get her rigged, the H22 is a very nice boat. Enjoy her and the restoration work you've done.

What all did you restore? We just purchased 1981 Hunter22. Nice boat but a bit warn. Did you redo non-skid surface? How did you get out old stains? We're using Bartenders Best Friend cleaner.
