I have a number of small chips and cracks in the gelcoat of my 1998 beneteau and have been reading various 'how to' articles. I haven't repaired gelcoat damage, and I am getting overloaded with information at the moment. What is the typical DIY method. Also what is the diffrence between a gelcoat kit and a flowcoat kit?

Gelcoat-the lowest common denominator

Stuart - Ask whoever is selling "flowcoat" what the difference is: I suspect it may be semantic. I've been reading all the posts on this particular topic and it's obviously a concern that ALL fiberglass boat owners share, to some degree. Given that, it's odd that some company that enjoys a reputation for high standards & professionalism ( as WEST does in the epoxy field) has not produced a manual detailing the repair methods. As you've noted,it's easy to get overwhelmed with information on the topic. In the absence of a definitive primer that you can trust, you just have to wade through and I think you will find some common "truths" will become apparent. I recently watched a couple of 30 min. videos on the subject that demystified it for me. I took careful notes and would be happy to share the info with you if you e-mail me direct: it's a bit too long for this forum. It is really a fairly simple business & the only real hassle is in getting a good colour match. The rest is just following the basics & don't look for "miracle fixes".

Printed materials

We publish 2 manuals that address options and techniques for making repairs of this kind - 002-550 Fiberglass Boat Repair and Maintenance and 002-740 Final Fairing and Finishing. Chapter 2 in the Fiberglass repair manual has specific techniques for repairs to gelcoat. The Fairing manual doesn't include the spacific techniques outlines in the other manual, but it does include detailed definitions and characterizations of many different finish materials. You should be able to get these manuals through ATL composites in Austrailia.
