We are thinking of relocating to the Central West Coast, San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach Area. Haven't found too much on line in regards to marinas, sailing or boats for sail. Any info you could share would be appreciated. email to mhamer@mediaone.net Thank you in advance.

As long as you like...

Gale force winds and 15-20 ft. seas you'll love it! Seriously, the coast from Pt. Conception north to SF is pretty rugged and undeveloped which is nice but it does have a reputation for being pretty nasty esp. in the winter. Morro Bay would be nice if you just want to day sail but there might not be many places you could cruise to for weekends/short vacations if you like that sort of thing. It's a long way between harbors... Nice place to live though. Good luck with your move!

michele, sorry to reply so late--I've been out sailing for the past couple of weeks. Spent 15 years sailing out of Monterey before relocating to the Bay area, and have sailed the stretch between northern and southern CA a dozen or so times. The problem with ports like Morro Bay is that within a single summer you'll have sailed to every possible anchorage or destination within weekend distance. You'll have learned how capricious the harbor bar is, shoaling so as to make sailing impossible during a great number of winter weekends. Were I to live in SLO (great town!) I'd seriously consider putting my boat into a southern harbor such as Ventura to open up access to the Channel Islands. A somewhat long driving commute would, in my opinion, more than compensate for weekend access to great sailing destinations. One thing to realize about central california is that the wait lists are sometimes greater than ten years to get a slip. I know this to be true in Santa Cruz, Monterey, and Santa Barbara. I added my name to the list when I moved to Monterey in 1984, and was told it would be approximately 12 years. When I left town in 1998, I was still "several years away" from getting a slip.
