we noticed late in the season that our factory outboard mount (original equipment) was failing under the higher torque and weight of the 9.9hp 4stroke that came with the boat (purchased in the begining of season). The idea now is to move the outboard to a standard 4stoke bracket on the port side and free up the starboard side for a walk through swim ladder. anyone know if the hull is strong enough at teh stern for an engine mount??

I replaced the old 7 hp on my 1983 O'Day 23 with a new Honda 9.9. I strengthened the wedge by epoxying the inside, replaced the Gerlick bracket with a new one(although not a 4 stroke model), made a 2 foot square galvanized steel backing plate to bolt through, added two addition bolts through the wedge and transom, and added a steel cable with padlock bolted to a through eyebolt for security from theft and bracket failure. Maybe next year I will convert over to a new 4 stroke motor bracket. CVP

I just posted a question about long vs short shaft. Another option I've considered is building a new mount so the short shaft sits lower. Do you have any pictures of your new setup?

I have an Oday 22 and have replaced the motor mount on this boat -maybe close to the 24 maybe not -- but be warned that this transom was reinforced on the inside by a piece of plywood that was almost half the size of the whole transum- My old mount was reinforced with 3/8 plywood and when the 8 horse 4 stroke was "pushing hard" (approx 5 knots) I saw flex in the whole transom - I replaced it with doubled up 3/4 inch plywood - this is over-kill - most people use 3/4 and glass it in good -- I did sail 2 years with the 3/8 plywood in place and was just careful not to put too much tork on the back of the boat- There was sort of a wave in the boat where the motor mount sits - by almost 1/2 inch where the bottom of the mount pushes in and the top is pulled out almost this much- this only happened when too much power was applied- Now all is well - no "wave" in the transom when I test the strength - I do still baby the boat by keeping the power low so that I do not overpower - by trying to go above hull speed- I think that could be the end-- Algae

port outboard mount
i don't have the conversion completed yet for the port side outboard mount but the idea is "simply" to remove the swim ladder, close the holes left behind, reinforce from the inside with glassed in plywood, and then mount a new bracket. the boat is very well designed however getting back into the boat from the ladder was pretty difficult for some of my guests and yet the engine is in the perfect place for climbing back aboard. The engine mount was fixed really to the deck in the back of the cockpit - will changing to the transom be strong enough??
